A Long Expected Party: Celebrating the Release of “The Hobbit”

With the release of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey just weeks away, fans and organisations all over the globe are gearing up for this much anticipated event.

1. Earlier this month, Air New Zealand, currently being promoted as the “airline of Middle-Earth,” released An Unexpected Briefing: a safety video to commemorate the exciting start of the new trilogy. Air New Zealand combines geekyness and humour to teach passengers important safety procedures. “Hobbit fever” has taken over New Zealand and tourism is predicted to skyrocket, as Middle-earth is an ideal holiday destination for Tolkien aficionados from across the world. Wellington, NZ has now been “the middle of Middle-Earth” in celebration of hosting the premiere of An Unexpected Journey on 28 November 2012.

2. In a press release published at the end of October, Denny’s, a family restaurant chain based in the United States, announced the release of Middle-earth authentic fare you’d expect to see in the Prancing Pony. The menu advertises tasty platters that fit the extensive eating schedule of hobbits. Featured selections include Bilbo’s Berry Smoothie, Hobbit Hole Breakfast, Shire Sausage Skillet, The Ring Burger (a burger to rule all burgers), Frodo’s Pot Roast Skillet, Gandalf’s Gobble Melt, Lonely Mountain Treasure, Dwarves’ Turkey and Dressing Dinner, Radagast’s Red Velvet Pancake Puppies (and sundae), and the Lone-Lands Campfire Cookie milkshake. Patrons will also be given a trading card pack with each entrée, and have a chance to collect all 12 exclusive cards sponsored by Denny’s and Warner Bros. Pictures.

3. Jeremy Telford, the an artist with Balloon Guy Entertainment, created a “balloon Bag End” in his living room. Telford created the walls, ceiling and a window, as well as a fireplace, chandelier, hutch, and clock entirely out of balloons. The project included approximately 2600 balloons and took 40 hours to complete, spanning the length of three days and was documented and presented in a timelapse published on the Balloon Guy Entertainment Youtube channel.

4. Prince Charles, who turned 64 on 14 November, celebrated his birthday by travelling to New Zealand for a tour of Middle-earth. Peter Jackson, his tour guide, introduced Prince Charles to the dwarves, including Peter Hambleton (as Gloin), who met the Prince whilst being outfitted with makeup and prosthetics to create the look of Gloin. Thoroughly grateful, Prince Charles regarded the tour and meeting Hambleton and actor Mark Hadlow (Dori) as, “the best birthday present I’ve had in a long time.”
