EW.com is reporting that Avengers: Age of Ultron has found its titular villain. James Spader (The Practice, Boston Legal, and the upcoming The Blacklist) has signed on to play Ultron in the Avengers sequel.
From the canon: Ultron is a main Avengers villain, a sentient android that wants to take over the Earth. In the original comics, Ultron is the creation of Hank “Ant-man” Pym. However, as Joss Whedon previously announced that Pym would not be making his debut in Age of Ultron, many have guessed that Ultron will be the brain child of Tony Stark instead. Spader’s casting would seem to debunk the guesses of those who believe that Ultron will be an evil JARVIS, as Tony’s loyal servant is currently voiced by Paul Bettany.
For those unfamiliar with James Spader’s work, take a look at a preview for NBC’s The Blacklist. Spader is so good at playing bad, it will be a pleasure to see him to chew the scenery as Ultron.
