BookTalk: The Fault in Our Stars

Founder

Editors Rosi and Melissa have gotten together for a very long, very nerdy discussion of The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (that link is to Amazon; you can get it also on eBook here). You can download this discussion by

(it will also shortly be uploaded to the PotterCast feed as an extra, so if you are a subscriber you should be able to get it right to your device), or you can just hit the play button below to get listening. Warning, there will be spoilers, because we are discussing the book fully – so you should be sure to have read the book or be prepared not to complain when we talk about that time ___ did ____ to ____ and then ___ ensued. Though, to be fair, ___ is pretty worth hearing about.

ALSO: We will be hosting a live chat discussion here on Leaky next WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, at 6pm Eastern (11pm British): get our your books, your highlighters, and your nerdiest hat and meet us on the front page of LeakyNews.com.

Without further ado! All the imagery, the metaphors, the humor, the fun, the real-life similarities… all of it is in the file below. Enjoy!

I love that Melissa picked up on Gus’s longing for the old swing set. That moment jumped out at me because it forced me to remember that he was a young 17 year old boy. That made it even more heartbreaking because throughout the books I’d interpreted Gus in my head as being this worldly old soul and when he longs for the swing set he never knew I couldn’t help but detach that from a longing for childhood and health. Gah this book was so good.

I really enjoyed this. Not to pressure but I hope you do more podcasts/posts like this. Not a regular thing but an intelligent analysis and reflection on something with so much meaning would be great to hear now and then.

i am really surprised that there might a meaning to name “Lidewij Vliegenthart”. I just thought he named her to “honour” Sanne and Lidewij.

I rewatched an old Question Tuesday video. And someone ask why John doesn’t blink and he answered that he got robot eyes. I am wondering if he thought of Isaac already…

Looking foward for the livestream and more bookchats!

  • Kara

Two of my favourite book-discussers, hooray! I will be listening to this soon, but I want to thank you in advance for doing it. I would definitely go for more book/fandom chats on LeakyNews (PotterCast is my faaaavourite). :)

So much of this book was way over my head. Thanks for explaning it.

  • Melanie

This was really fun! I enjoyed listening and I definitely think that you should chat about more books!

  • Johanna

I really liked your discussion and I’m looking forward to the live chat!
Leaky News should have a book club and a once-a-month live chat discussing the book everyone just read. TFIOS could be the first book :)

  • Jennifer Scheidegger

More book discussions! You two are great book discussors!

The quote at the beginning of the books seems to equate water to oblivion. I found it very interesting that one of the first things Augustus Waters says is that he fears oblivion. When read in the context that water is the inevitable force that brings together and tears apart all we know, it seems as though the thing Augustus fears most is himself.

moarrr book discussions indeed! really changing my understanding of TFioS, I enjoyed it and will likely listen to this again. this also makes me miss high-school english class (being a med student, I don’t get to have a greater understanding of books very often).

Just listened to the chat between Melissa and Rosi, which I enjoyed. HOWEVER, it is a turn off when other books are mentioned and described as a bad book. It is not anyones place to judge others reading choices – just be glad they are reading :) I work in a library and do not cringe (much) when the newest inspirational fiction has 200 holds. It is not something I enjoy reading but I should not fault others for choosing to do so.

Mmmm… I take issue with that. There are good and bad everything in this world, and if we never make an attempt to differentiate between what we think is good and bad, it leads to less celebration of the good and more false propping up of the bad. But like all things, these are our opinions. Rosi and my opinion of bad books is just as valid as anyone else’s, which is to say, you are free to disagree with it or ignore it completely. But I don’t think anyone should act as though all books are equal because to call any book bad might harm reading. I think it does a lot worse to the act of reading to pretend it’s all the same and anyone can do it, and anything you pick up adds as much value to your world and thought process as any other.
That doesn’t mean I think you always have to read high minded, Important Books. There’s a place for everything, for every type of books. i’ve read plenty of books I consider bad, and would read them again. I don’t have to say a book is good just because it’s been read, or refrain from having an opinion on it for fear of discouraging others to read. I put a lot more worth in encouraging others to read the good books first. :)
