The first movie installment of Cassandra Clare’s hit fantasy novels, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones begins filming today in Toronto. The all-star cast includes Lily Collins as main character Clary Fray, Jamie Campbell Bower as Shadowhunter Jace Wayland, and Robert Sheehan as Clary’s best friend Simon Lewis.
The Mortal Instruments series is a set of six novels based on the life of Clary Fray, a New York City teen who discovers her hidden and dramatic history after encountering several mysterious Shadowhunters in her favorite club. As of now, five of the six novels have been published, with the sixth expected in September 2014. Clare has also written a companion trilogy, The Infernal Devices, set 130 years earlier, and is expected to publish The Dark Artifices, set in present day Los Angeles.
Filming for City of Bones will last until November. The film is expected to be released in August of 2013.
