“Community” Season 4 Premiere Pays Tribute to “Hunger Games”

It’s over a month until the fourth season of Community premieres on NBC but EW has a sneak peek of the season opener and its tribute (insert dodgy pun noise here) to The Hunger Games. Here’s what we can expect to see on the 19th October, although–it being Community–it’s never quite what you expect:

When the Greendale student records seem to be lost, the Dean (Jim Rash) stages a Hunger Games-like competition to determine enrollment in a class called The History of Ice Cream. (Which raises the question: There’s actually a class at Greendale called The History of Ice Cream? “Ice cream is something that people eat every day and they probably don’t know its origin story,” deadpans McHale. “F— you and your elitist I-don’t-need-to-know-about-my-frozen-treats-and-where-they-came-from attitude.”)

The article includes two pictures from the episode, one of which features unicorns. Sort of.

Lastly, it’s time to put your detective hats on and/or jump into your time machine:

Jeff not only competes in the games, he even performs an elaborate tango with Dean Pelton, who dons multiple dresses in the episode. “He will repulse and arouse you all at once,” notes McHale. “Mostly repulse.” McHale also offers this tease about another part of the premiere: “It is an homage to something that kids in the late ’80s and early ’90s watched on Saturday mornings.”

Um, SMTV:Live? Live & Kicking? I’m too British for this guessing game. What do you reckon it will be? Let us know in comments.

Jim Rash’s face in the second one. I can’t.

Well, I don’t know if it was popular overseas, but I seem to remember the big teen thing on Saturday mornings in the late 80s and early 90s was Saved By The Bell. I always felt the show was corny (please don’t kill me, Zack Morris fans); I was in high school at the time and I feel I may have been a wee bit older than their target demographic (odd for a show about high school). Or maybe I was just that uncool.

It’s amusing to see that the Dean has decided, once again, to cover up a mistake or discrepancy by holding a massive tournament of destruction. And it amuses me even more that Jeff Winger would go to the ultimate extreme (dancey-time with Dean Pelton and his unicorn lackeys) just to get into a class called History of Ice Cream. Learning!

By the way, I’m pretty sure that the red dress Jim Rash is wearing in the first pic is the same one Katniss wears during her television interview in the film of the Hunger Games (and even the same hairstyle). Maybe that was already obvious to everyone, though.

I also have no idea, but holycrap, I’m exited.

This looks really interesting and certainly helps abate my fear that the new creators are going to make it more mainstream and ‘normal’.
