Geeks Are Alive and Well at London 2012

The London 2012 Olympics are not just a place for athletes, they are a place for geeks. From the enormous Voldermort in the opening ceremonies we should have had an inkling that this year’s games would bring out some of the things we love most. Little did we know that the biggest geeks of the games would be the gymnasts. Yesterday during the women’s artistic gymnastics team final self proclaimed Nerdfighter and member of Team Great Britain, Jennifer Pinches,  flashed the Nerdfighter symbol during the competition. UPDATE: Check out this great interview Jennifer and her dad did with the BBC where she explains the DFTBA symbol. You can watch the full interview here.

Another lesser known gymnast, Elsa Garcia Rodriguez Blancas, of Mexico showed her love for something other than tumbling when she used a medley from Zelda as her floor routine music in qualifying on Sunday.

While Elsa didn’t make it to the finals in the event, her music was refreshing in the midst of more classical music selections. Check out her routine here and since you may not have played Zelda in a while here’s a music refresher.

We will be keeping our eyes out for more nerdy goodness as the games continues. Let us know if you catch any nerdy shenanigans during London 2012 in the comments.
