J.K. Rowling Releasing a Book for Adults

J.K. Rowling’s agency, the Blair Partnership, announced this morning that the Harry Potter author will be releasing a new novel for adults.

The only other info on the page, besides a graphic, is a note from the author indicating that “While I have loved writing it just as much, my next book will be very different from the Harry Potter series.”

Details will be announced “later in the year.” A press release further states:

The book has been bought by Little, Brown and Company in the UK and US.

Although I’ve enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series, which has been published so brilliantly by Bloomsbury and my other publishers around the world. The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry’s success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life.

UPDATE: jkrowling.com is being “refreshed and redesigned” and will be opened again later this spring. An e-mail list has been added to the Web site’s interface for readers to subscribe to updates.

    ALL OF THE NOSTALGIA. Lev Grossman has proven adult books can still contain fantasy. I doubt there will be any of the wizarding world or magic in the new book, but I hope it contains some aspect of fantasy/sci-fi, or is set in a different world.     To be honest, I think this book will not contain fantasy. What it’s about, no idea, but I’m sure the main character is a female xD

      yea i hope it is a fantasy book atleast with the same general potential that harry potter had and also that it will live up to its expectations. hopefully its not some weird far fetched thing that is not even close to what we expect fom jo rowling.

    I bet the protagonist is a girl this time. Other than that I don’t really know what to expect! I think there won’t be any fantasy elements in this novel. Jo Rowling probably wants to explore her writing ability with other genres, so she’s gonna try and stay away from Harry Potter as much as possible.

    Could this be the political fairytale? I do hope so, ’cause I’ve been looking forward to that, and I think it’s a great concept.

    I suspect we might get a engaging female main character, that it is not a fantasy, and it will have a good sense of mystery, since Rowling is so strong with that genre, given that harry potter is as much a series of Mystery novels as they are Fantasy novels. I also suspect that it will be thought provoking, coyly and expertly giving readers things to consider about the human condition and experince.

    she said that the ‘political fairytale’ was for younger readers than Harry Potter was focused on… so I think it is safe to say that it is not.

    I have to agree with the female lead character.. but what the genre or theme could be is beyond me! But thinking it’ll keep the kind of mystery/page turner suspense thing style she’s so good at :p

    Mystery novel! With suspense! And awesomeness! Not necessarily murder mystery (since those can be kinda cheesy) but definitely some kind of big mystery involved. Because she’s good at that.

    I don’t know if adult means mature. It might mean the in between of Young Adult but not child and Mature. I heard that it’s actually supposed to be about Albus Severus but it’s not the same formula of the HP novels, rather it’ll be like the Marauders. So more about Teenagers/Young Adults – school, fighting, relationships, sex.

    I can’t decide if it’s gonna be Fantasy in a modern setting like Harry Potter was, or if it’s gonna be somethign totally new entirly for her, liek Scifi or Romance, not that there isn’t a lot of romance in HP, but there’s a lot of it. I wonder if she’ll discuss more adult themes like depression, considering that she went through it herself. It’s a tough one. I just don’t want it to be a flop …

    I think it will occur in a world that is parallel to Harry Potter universe. Although the plot has nothing to do with Harry Potter there will be certain amount of implication of the on going incidence in wizarding world, such as a car crash happened in London and witness does not remember anything….

    You guys know what I’m talking about.

    I will be VERY interested to hear this different voice from her. I am confident that whatever it is, it will be surprising. Of course if it doesn’t sell 5 million the first week critics will call it a failure…but she set the bar pretty high for herself.
