The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Jena Malone is in early negotiations for the part of acerbic District 7 Tribute Johanna Mason in Catching Fire, the next installment of The Hunger Games.

Malone is known for roles in Sucker Punch and Pride and Prejudice (2005). What do you think? Can Malone handle the tough and troubled Mason? Let us know in the comments!

Never seen her in anything, but she totally looks the part, so if she can handle the character’s toughness I think she’ll be a great fit! Also, nice to see that the rumor mill actually comes through once in a while!

I’m still holding out for Summer Glau.

No, jesus no, I’ve seen her act and she’s not good. And she won’t be a good Johanna. Naya Rivera is the best option for that role.

Oh, no! That’s not a good idea! Naya Rivera or Mila Kunis are the bests options for that role!

  • Nancy

No! Naya is a much better option for that role!!

I don’t think so, I personally think Naya rivera should play the part. she plays a similar part on glee, and I think she would make a really good johanna

She will be fantastic. So glad she got the role.

obviously Naya Rivera is the best option

I think this is a pretty good choice. I thought she did very well in “Hatfields & McCoys”. She seems a bit young for Johanna, but I think the age difference with Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson is already off. Also, I’m more concerned with who Finnick is!

    NAYA RIVERA!

  • 19yearslater

Yes! She’d be wonderful. I bet she can pull a Jennifer Lawrence on some of the unbelievers once the film is out. I hope this all pans out, I’d love to see her as Johanna.

Everyone is so eager for Naya to take the role. I guess Santana is just too much of a meanie to be ignored.

Well, not “everyone”…even on this little message board, 6 out of 10 support Naya, and 4 out of 10 support Jena Malone. While 40 percent may be the minority, by no means does it indicate that “everyone” wants Ms. Rivera for the role (and I have a sneaking suspicion that someone may have posted multiple times under different names, not that it matters). I’ve learned over the years to trust casting directors, as they very rarely get it wrong; I’ve seen some beloved properties go through this same process (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc) and usually there are casting announcements which seem perfectly right, then there are those which seem far out of left field (but usually end up being a delightful surprise), and once in a very great while a stinker. There is always a lot to consider when casting a role, beyond whether someone physically resembles a character from a book. There’s personality, experience, and probably most important, how that actor or actress works with the rest of the cast (i.e. Is there chemistry?). That’s why many auditions require an actor to read with other potential actors, to see how they play off each other. Apparently, if she even did audition, Ms. Rivera didn’t fit the bill, or Ms. Malone fit it better. Let’s wait and see.
