At the End of the Day There Was Nothing But Les Mis Clips

Managing Editor

Last night, seemingly out of nowhere, the Les Miserables movie’s YouTube channel published five one minute-ish clips from some of the better known numbers from the film. Take a peek, then scroll down for more of my thoughts after I’m done having feels.

Ok, pull it together. I’ve stopped sobbing, now it’s your turn. I have a few thoughts.

  1. The live singing makes all the difference, doesn’t it? Especially in “At The End Of The Day.” The chorus – which isn’t being piped in or added in post – is rich and present. It’s immediate. And a little haunting.
  2. The folks at Universal are really tipping their hand on this one. If there’s ever any anxiety about the returns or possible award buzz, even big holiday films will play it close to the chest with just a handful of flashy trailers. But we know early screenings have started, so if there was any worry or any rush to adjust anything, we wouldn’t have these clips to enjoy now
  3. I know she was classically trained, but Amanda Seyfried has that little, light vibrato in her soprano that makes my eye twitch just a little. I always thought her extended notes in Mamma Mia! sounded vaguely goat-like.
  4. They’re giving relative unknown Samantha Barks lots of play, which is great. I’m stoked. But I wish they were doing the same of Aaron Tveit. He has just as much to gain from the exposure, and really is just a dreamboat.
  5. Eddie Redmayne is about the cutest thing ever.
  6. I think Russell Crowe may be my least favorite part of the movie. I’m holding my breath though.
  7. In case you’re still sobbing, here’s how Kate Beaton sees Javert.

How do my feels match up with your feels? Let me know in the comments!

I wish they gave us a sneak preview of Aaron Tveit too. I agree with you on how he could gain a lot from the exposure.
Russell Crowe’s voice kinda reminds me of Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia.. I don’t know if this is good or bad.

You aren’t the first person to say that, and I’m sure you won’t be the last. But I always thought Pierce sounded like David Bowie in MM lol

I’ve spent months wondering what Stars was going to sound like from Russell Crowe and I am officially nervous. Also I third the wish for Aaron Tveit. Because 1. hottie and 2. Enjolras is everyone’s dream part. If you disagree you’re lying to yourself.
