Like Sherlock Holmes With Brain Damage: TVD 4×16 Review

Editor

Welcome back lovlies, it’s been too long. After a two week hiatus The Vampire Diaries returned last night with episode 16, “Bring It On”. With Elena’s emotions off this episode was bound to be a little out of the box, but we could not have predicted quite this much weird crazy. There’s not many positive things to say about last night’s episode. “Bring it On” was just a set up for next week where Elena and Damon inevitably wreak havoc in New York. Getting a little bit of old Damon back will be nice, so here’s hoping the change of scenery will help the plot along. Caroline and Stefan were adorable though, and that should be a thing

We now know (sort of) why Phoebe Tonkin will be starring on The Originals. Seriously Hayley, put some clothes on nobody wants to see that, although good for Klaus. He hasn’t seen any action in a while. Hayley falls into the Bonnie, April category of characters we wish didn’t exist and having her back and on her back was more than a little unpleasant. At least with Bonnie and April we care about the effect their sudden death might have on other characters, with Hayley we just don’t care. No one cares you’re an orphan. No one cares that you’ll never be with Tyler. And no one wants you with Klaus. Please let that be a one time thing, it was nauseating. In the quest for Katherine, Hayley may be useful as she hints to Klaus that she knows Katherine’s friends. I suppose the up side to Klaus no longer being on The Vampire Diaries with the new spinoff show, is that Hayley is going away with him. We will never have to see her face again if we don’t want to.

Silas was a silent presence in “Bring it On” allegedly steeling blood bags from hospitals in the area and springing Sheriff Forbes into action.  In other Mystic Falls town news, mayor Bonnie’s dad has put vervain in the water supply making all the people taste bad and forcing all nubile vampire girls to shower in the Salvatore house. Rebekah’s still looking for the cure and has the line of the night as she and Damon attempt to track down Klaus’ recent victim “you’re like Sherlock Holmes, but with brain damage”. Nice Burn. Rebekah also mentions that she found Shadypants dead on the island, but everyone is so wrapped up in their own stuff Damon doesn’t realize hey that must mean Silas is using ShadyPants’ body.

Best news of the night, Matt Donovan isn’t poor anymore. He now holds the deed to the Lockwood’s enormous house, which if he’s smart he will sell and take in a huge chunk of change. Since we all know Matt Donovan isn’t smart, it’s more likely that we’ll see Matt inviting a string of vampires into the Lockwood manor completely defeating the point of Tyler leaving him the house. Also, that note. Tyler writes like a 5 year old, which strangely works with his character. Is it weird the note wasn’t signed or addressed to Caroline? Could Matt have made it up? But Tyler’s voice over was real. Maybe I’m being paranoid. Anywho, yay Matt! Welcome to the world of real estate assets.

Elena’s emotions off should have meant fun sexy times, but instead just meant Elena acting like a brat. We were right there with you Caroline, we wanted to wring her skinny little neck too. Having a good time doesn’t need to mean being whiny, a lesson which Elena will hopefully learn while galavanting through New York. Really the best part of this episode was the preview for next week.

So what did you think of “Bring it On”? Am I missing something? Was the episode actually good? Will Stefan and Caroline FINALLY happen? Does Hayley have a point? Let me know in the comments.

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday at 8/7c on the CW.

Klaus/Hayley is nauseating. Come to think of it, Hayley is a pretty nauseating character all by herself. I’m probably in the minority of Klaus/Caroline shippers, but I’m still holding out hope. Not that they’ll get together, but that his love for her will eventually turn him into a slightly better person before he leaves the show.

I had no idea you watched this show. Yay! Is TVD all of the sudden one of the most widely watched shows among LeakyNews editors? It might be.

And yes, Hayley is nauseating. I hope Klaus’ love for Caroline is eternal. I see them getting together in about the year 2165…

I’ve spent the last month catching up and now I’m finally current, hooray! I think Doctor Who still takes the cake, but it’s gotta be close.

The sooner they get rid of Hayley, the better. They could definitely be together if Klaus just stopped being such a dick. I mean, you can see that she considers it, to the point where if he wasn’t trying to kill her or somebody she loved every 5 minutes, they’d probably have a good shot together. But naturally Klaus needs to sort his own shit out first before anything like that could happen. It’s not like Tyler’s much of a catch, so I can’t see him and Caroline sticking around all that long.

Basically, my default mode in this show is that I don’t care who lives or dies except Damon. I sometimes make exceptions for Klaus and Caroline, but both have had their particularly annoying moments.

Agreed, the show was lack luster, and boring. It makes me wonder how much can they really do now that practically everyone is a vampire, the fun of the show is that some of the main cast were normal humans dealing with vampires. Oh well, I may be leaving Mistic Falls for Klaus’ new show once it starts.

What? How did you not love the new bitchy, brutally honest Elena? I love this version of her.

    • Chaya

She’s definitely loads better than always crying Elena. I’m a fan of somewhere in between Elena, like at the college halloween party last year.

I’d agree with that. College Party Elena was fun and – while exploring her darker vampire nature – still had a conscience. During this episode there was no purpose toward any of her actions and everything seemed somewhat random.
