Lizzie Bennet Diaries #88!

Founder

It’s the 88th video! And at the time of posting I’ve got no thoughts on it because I am out of the house and another lovely LeakyNews staffer will be putting the link in this post and publishing. You guys get talking, I’ll be here very soon.

It’s HERE!

So remember the time I said I would be here very soon and then the internet stole my entire night because the president of the United States met one of the presidents of Nerdfighteria and they exchanged words of awesome and stuff? Yeah. Sorry guys. (PS And then the Internet went out and I couldn’t post it until the next day? YEAH.)

But, I also felt like this episode was pretty self-explanatory and a reset button. I mean, it’s been a very action-packed couple of episodes, and this was a nice moment to remember that these two girls have a little bit of catching up, a little bit of fixing up, a little bit of drinking up, to do together. I thought they’d be a little bit more excited at the news that the site was gone, but this way is perfectly valid as well.

Of note is that no one believes George took it down. It’s someone else. Thank you to “whoever” did that. There’s some talk in the comments of Lydia knowing it was Darcy; I’m not sure where I am with that theory. In this construction of things there’s not much reason for her to find out before Lizzie; then again Lydia has been liking lots of Lizzie/Darcy stuff online, and she is the type to run to the Internet and find out EVERYTHING, unlike Lizzie.

Lydia asked Lizzie for help, we should point out in a one-line paragraph.

If you’ve been paying attention to the twitters, some things of note: Fitz is apparently off to Fiji with his boyfriend Brandon (is “Fiji” a joke on the Fi/Gi shippers?). Also, Gigi has been very active tonight, with some hints that she punted her brother toward a Bennet for some Valentine’s day lovin’.

Just what she asked him to do? A romantic gesture for Lizzie maybe?

(If this is true it supports my theory that the PJs-clad next episode contains the discussion of Darcy’s acts as a nod to the PJs-clad scene in the BBC miniseries. If I’m not misremembering, that’s the one that contains this line:

There certainly was some great mismanagement in the education of those two young men. One has got all the goodness, and the other all the appearance of it.

Update: No, I’m wrong, reader Wahlee has read P&P TWO HUNDRED TIMES and says:

The quote you gave was indeed from a nightgown-clad scene, but it was during the discussion of Mr. Darcy’s first proposal, not the aftermath of Lydia’s getting married. In *that* one, at least in the miniseries, is when Lizzy says that she wishes she never told Darcy about Lydia’s elopement, and that “I cannot bear to think that he is alive in the world and thinking ill of me.” (Lady Catherine’s visit also comes after Darcy and Bingley have returned to Netherfield, not before. They both come and call at Longbourn, then go to dinner a couple of days later. Then Darcy leaves for London, and a couple of days later Bingley proposes. Then a few days after that, Lady Catherine shows up. Then Lady Catherine calls on Darcy on her way back through London and tells him about Lizzy’s obstinacy. Then Darcy, full of hope, goes back to Netherfield, and proposes again.)

Jane also seemed a little smug in that coming attraction, which we’ve seen Jane be when giving her sister the old nah-nah. Lizzie also looks a bit abashed. If anything she might finally be admitting that despite her original assumptions and prejudices, Darcy is the better man.

I know a lot of people are going to make a little Fault in Our Stars reference here with the “Okay,” and sure, it may be a nod. I think this ‘okay’ is lovely and sisterly and all their own, though. They’re OK, after being incredibly not so, and we can move on.

And now we’re close to the next Pemberley Digital Video, so that should be full of le plot! Back soon!

  • DiagonAlleyCat

Yay for sister growth! :) If only we could see the Darcy siblings… I guess that’s what tomorrow is for.

    • lollifant

Yes, I hope Darcy is at Pemberly again :)

  • Aisling Greene

I’m glad they apologized and that Lydia didn’t assume Wickham had taken down the video :) Why are they in pjs next video though???

    • Leah

So I’ll admit it’s been a while since I’ve reread the book, but going by my memory of the 2005 movie version, they could be in pjs because Catherine de Bourgh is doing her infamous “shades of Pemberley,” telling off of Lizzie for getting near Darcy scene. That’s the only reason I can think of at the moment, though I could be wrong.

      • Tiffanie Ing

I totally hadn’t thought of the shades of Pemberley thing – you’re right, in the 1995 movie, that scene is at night, although in the book, it happens in the morning (though “too early in the morning for visitors”)…but if we’re going by the book, Lizzie needs to learn about Darcy’s role in all of this BEFORE Catherine de Bourgh comes to town – because she needs to be able to truly defend herself. We’ve already seen that her feelings for Darcy are changing, but we haven’t seen the full-on proof that he’s a standout guy, and neither has Lizzie.

I think Bing coming back to Jane needs to happen next – Darcy needs to undo ALL of his wrongs before he comes back.

        • laura

You’re right, Catherine de Bourgh’s intervention happens later in the book, and in this adaptation is not so easy that it happens at all..

        • http://twitter.com/TrillianBlack Trillian Black

When Lizzie and Jane are talking about what happened at Pemberley in the BBC version, they are “in their PJ’s”. So I was automatically reminded of that conversation (although I’m not sure that it’s also in the book). Those two need to talk about their feelings regarding Bing and Darcy on camera (I think). So I’d imagine we’ll see a scenario where Lizzie can’t sleep and finds herself talking to the camera (because that’s how she copes with everything) and Jane finding her like that. In my experience people often have the most honest conversations when they are really tired, so this could just be a good setting for this conversation to happen.

          • laura

It could be, it sounds interesting as an explanation..
And than, just after that, they have to have Bing back in town! :)

  • Tiffanie Ing

I posted this on my Tumblr, but thought I’d add it here as well:

I love that this isn’t an easy fix. It’s going to take time for Lizzie and Lydia to work things out and forge a real bond. I’m looking forward to seeing it. I think one of the best ways might be for Lydia to post some new videos of her own, once she’s feeling better, and for Lizzie to be in them.

Also, I think Lydia knows exactly who took down the website. I really feel like she’s not telling because she’s trying to respect people’s privacy now. She knows that if Darcy isn’t telling Lizzie about it herself, she shouldn’t, either. It should be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I would have thought that Charlotte would have heard about the Darcys fixing this…she’s in the industry, wouldn’t she be interested in Domino? I wonder if Charlotte will be the one to spill the beans…or will it be “Prof Gardiner”, like in the books?

    • lollifant

Exactly, this is definitely a start for Lizzie and Lydia’s relationship, but they have a long way to go. :) This episode made me so happy though!

Oh yes, Caroline, what has she been doing? She must know!

    • http://twitter.com/imarielle Arielle

I don’t think Lydia knows who took down the site. I mean how would she really know it was Darcy unless she was watching the videos and I don’t really think she has been. It is more likely that either Darcy or Charlotte would be the one to break the news on that front. We know Charlotte has tweeted that she’s been catching up on the internet recently so it is likely she’s found Domino since she is in the industry. I’m curious to see what tomorrow’s video will bring to this.

      • Tiffanie Ing

Watch the video again around 1:50. The way Lydia looks at the camera and hesitates before saying, “I don’t know, I guess someone just took it down” and then later, when she says thank you and looks right at the camera…it kind of sounds like she’s saying it to someone.

Think of it this way – if you were Lydia, wouldn’t you be obsessing and refreshing that page over and over, and trying your darndest to figure out what people were doing to take down the site? You know that Darcy knows about it, wouldn’t you find out a bit more about his company?

Keep in mind that in the book, Lydia knows everything that happened and that Darcy organized her marriage…

        • http://twitter.com/imarielle Arielle

I haven’t read the book so I can’t really comment on how this might be adapted, I can only provide theories based on what the writers have shown us so far. That said, I took her direct looks at the camera as a way of breaking the fourth wall kind of thing and her addressing us, the fans, because it is believable in universe that with the popularity of Lizzie’s videos, somebody watching has the knowledge and power to get the site taken down.

I keep going back and forth in my head trying to figure out if I think Lydia has been watching Lizzie’s videos and if she knows about the Gigi/George connection and Domino and everything we know. I really don’t think she was watching Lizzie’s Pemberly videos while she was with George and I doubt she has been in a state of mind to want to go back and watch those yet. Sure she knows that Darcy knows since he sent Lizzie back home, but I don’t think she knows yet how involved Darcy is, yet. I mean I guess it is possible with all the time she’s spent alone locked up in her room she’s been surfing the internet for answers and discovered Domino and Darcy’s involvement, and just hasn’t found a way to tell Lizzie about that yet, but right now, personally, that is not something I believe has happened. With an interactive series like this, it’s hard to separate all of our interactions with the writer’s ideas of what is happening in the Universe. Sure people have been tweeting, tumblring and commenting on Lydia’s videos, probably telling her about Darcy, but how much of that is in universe vs. just in our world is hard to know. I hope that made sense.

          • http://twitter.com/theitgirl theitgirl

I think Lydia knows not only because of her look in the video, but because she does in the book

        • laura

I agree with you, Tiffanie, it looks like she knows, and for me it’s more realistic that she found out about domino that the opposite: just as you say, everybody would be obsessed about understanding what happened, even just to be sure that it’s for good.
And honestly I find very unrealistic also that Lizzie doesn’t watch the Domino videos. I mean, I understand that they are doing it for he story, but in real life she would never unfollow Pemberley and Gigi and just deliberately refuse to watch the videos.
I found “fake” also that Lydia and Lizzie stopped watching each other videos when they were fighting: I mean, I get that you’re mad at your sister, but you’re still curious to know what’s going on.. Even just to say “what a bitch” (siblings fights are always the toughers :)

          • http://www.theimportanceofbeingalix.blogspot.com/ Alix

Plus, she was liking all those sad Darcy/Lizzie Shipping posts on tumblr when she was wallowing about ruining her sisters’ lives. I think she knows more about the Darcy sitch than she’s letting on.

Huh… I am rethinking my opinion on this now. You know Lydia ran to read everything everyone said…

  • http://twitter.com/imarielle Arielle

Not anything to really do with today’s episode, but last night I discovered the Mr. Bennet Diaries on tumblr. It is fan made but a really fun read through of Mr. Bennet’s reactions to watching Lizzie and Lydia’s videos. When Lizzie was talking about how nice it was to be talking to her father again in the beginning of this video I was just thinking about all of his comments, and even though this blog isn’t made by the LBD team, it is a nice little side story so I thought I’d share for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

Is this real or a fan thing, do we know?

      • http://twitter.com/imarielle Arielle

It’s a fan thing as far as I know. At least I haven’t seen anything referencing it from the main LBD people. Even so though it is a nice little side story to read along with.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1412429 Melissa Anelli

Yea the official twitter says it’s a fan thing.

  • lollifant

I do want to know what will happen to Wickham now… Doesn’t seem like something that would be discussed on camera, although with Domino, you never know, that’s even more all about the drama!

  • http://twitter.com/theitgirl theitgirl

    Melissa! Where are your thoughts?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1412429 Melissa Anelli

THE INTERNET WOULDN’T LET ME POST THEM.

      • http://twitter.com/theitgirl theitgirl

        GIVE THE INTERNET PENNIES

  • Wahlee

Ah, Melissa. You’ve got your continuity mixed up a bit here (I’ve read the book 200+ times. I can’t help it!).

However, I think you’re right about what we’ll see next time. By this time in the book, Lizzy has realized that she is in love with Darcy, and that he’s pretty much the perfect guy for her, but believes that there’s no longer any chance that he’ll renew his proposal. If his pride revolted at her family’s behavior before, Lydia’s elopement and subsequent marriage to Darcy’s mortal enemy must preclude him ever wanting to marry into the family.

I’d be very surprised if, now that the alarm is over, Lizzie isn’t having some sleepless nights of introspection regarding Darcy. I’m guessing that Jane has now watched all of Lizzie’s videos, and is giving her some good-natured ribbing about how Darcy isn’t so bad after all, and maybe she even cares about him a little bit. And Lizzie is responding that yes, maybe he’s a much better man than she ever gave him credit for, and that she was going to say yes to his date invitation, but that she doesn’t think there’s much chance of them getting together anymore.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1412429 Melissa Anelli

Is this the same in the BBC series? is this why I am confused?

      200 TIMES !!!!!

      • Wahlee

The continuity is the same in the BBC series, yes. Watch the last episode– (or the last few minutes of the 5th episode)– it picks up basically where we are in the LBD.

And yes, at least 200 times. I tend to reread books I love, and I get through 2 books a week on average when I’m working and more when I’m not, so I’d read it probably 25 or 30 times since discovering it my senior year of high school before the Semester of the Horrible Freshman Roommate, who I could only stand if she wasn’t talking to me, and who would only not talk to me if I were reading, so I read a lot. A LOT. My best friend and I estimated that that semester alone, I read P&P twice a week (or more) so that’s at least 30 or 40 times, and then I read it about once a month for the rest of college (not counting when I managed to take a class where I had to read it, oh, the torture), and about 5 or 6 times a year since then, and. . . I know. I’m insane. Said best friend, who now teaches junior high math, uses me as an outlier when teaching statistics. :P

(Strangely, though, despite P&P being my very favorite book in the whole world, Mr. Darcy is pretty low on my list of Favorite Austen Heroes. If I could marry a Jane Austen hero, it would be Henry Tilney, hands down. He’s so wonderfully kind, yet so awesomely snarky.)

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1412429 Melissa Anelli

If they do another Austen you should do these recaps :)

          • Wahlee

            I thought of that. . .
