London 2012 Opening Ceremony: J.K. Rowling, Bond and…the TARDIS?

This evening the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games took place in London and featured a battle between Lord Voldemort and hundreds of Mary Poppinses, a history of Britain from the very first fields right through the Industrial Revolution, World Wars and up to something that looked a bit like a musical, dancing, social-media episode of skins. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling made an appearance, reading just before the villains of children’s literature crept out of the dark but most curiously of all, some of us thought we heard the sounds of a TARDIS. Could it be? Have a listen for yourself, care of TheDoctorWhoMedia on YouTube:

There’s still fifteen minutes to go of the Opening Ceremony. Stay closed for the latest on the whereabouts of the Doctor!

Update: No appearances from any of the Doctors but still great to have the homage in the form of the materialising TARDIS noise. We’ll keep updating our galleries with pictures from the Opening Ceremony; have a look at some of the first pictures below:

Did you guys notice that during the TARDIS sound, the camera cut to people in what looked to be The Doctor’s 3D “Void Stuff” glasses?

The segment with the Doctor was cut because of time, sadly

Hopefully it will be on the DVD!

I was totally thinking Lord of the Rings when the Olympic rings were coming together, but it’s fine that there wasn’t a direct reference. I was also hoping to see at least one of HP/Doctor Who/Sherlock, and since Jo, Voldemort, and the TARDIS noise all made appearances, I think they did pretty well.
