Musician Profile: Lauren Fairweather

Editor

LeakyNews is starting a new series called Musician Profiles. We will be asking musicians who work primarily on the internet questions about their musical past, present, and future. And we’ll have some fun! This week we start with Lauren Fairweather. Her most recent album, The Prince’s Tale, features songs based on the chapter of the same name in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

LeakyNews: How did you get started in music? How long have you been performing?

Lauren Fairweather: I started singing in choirs when I was in 3rd grade, and started playing in a band (The Moaning Myrtles) when I was 17. I started teaching myself to play guitar the summer after my freshman year of college, which let me start performing on my own and releasing music as Lauren Fairweather.

LN: What instrument(s) do you play?

LF: I play guitar and ukulele, but I also occasionally dabble in bass, melodica, and glockenspiel, which I’ve had to figure out how to play for recordings that demand certain instrumentation.

LN: How did you get involved with the online music community?

LF: I started posting music on MySpace for The Moaning Myrtles because that’s primarily where wizard rock existed back then. Wizard rock was definitely my introduction into the online music community, as there were lots of excited Harry Potter fans searching for new bands and they found us pretty quickly. We made friends with a bunch of the other bands and we all kind of promoted each other as well.

When I got a YouTube account in early 2006, I mostly used it to post silly videos. I started noticing that people were getting more creative with their videos, which inspired me to make video blogs and share new music I was writing. I got more involved in that community by co-founding fiveawesomegirls, a collaborative channel with four of my friends. That’s where a lot of my YouTube fanbase came from, and since then I’ve really had a blast making friends with other YouTubers and posting things for my subscribers to watch.

LN: Tell us about The Moaning Myrtles.

LF: My best friend Nina and I started The Moaning Myrtles when we were in high school. We were so excited that people liked the music and started writing more songs and playing shows. We’ve been able to play at a bunch of really awesome Harry Potter conferences, travel around the country, and meet so many awesome people as a result.

LN: Tell us about The Prince’s Tale and the music videos for that album.

LF: This past year, I released an album based on the memories in The Prince’s Tale chapter of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The songs alternate between Snape and Lily’s perspectives, mostly focusing on their childhood and teenage years. I posted a few videos of me playing the first couple songs on YouTube, and even had a really great video made for “It’s Real For Us” by some friends of mine. It’s the most professional-looking video I’ve been a part of. The response towards this album has been so awesome that I’ve decided to make videos of me playing the rest of the songs as well.

LN: Plans for your musical future? What’s next?

LF: I’m hoping to release an EP and another album at some point this year. Lately, I’ve been working more on internet promotion and crafting (I started an Etsy shop where I sell handmade plush toys!), but new music is definitely on the horizon for me. I’m going on a few big tours this summer as well, which is super exciting. We’ll be announcing the dates over the next couple months.

LN: Now for the fun ones. Favorite musician/group of all time?

LF: Oh goodness. Probably Ben Folds. He is excellent.

LN: Favorite food?

LF: Sushi!
