NBC Delays Fourth Season Of “Community”

Community was due to return to our screens on October 19th, but NBC have announced that they’re delaying the premiere of the new season indefinitely. Whitney, which was also due to premiere on the 19th, has also been postponed. NBC have issued the following statement regarding their decision:

“Given the success we’ve had for the past four weeks – including winning the first week of the season in A18-49 – we’ve decided to continue to concentrate our promotional strength on our new NBC shows that are scheduled Monday through Wednesday and have therefore decided to hold COMMUNITY and WHITNEY from their previously announced premieres of October 19th.  Without having to launch these comedies on Friday at this time, we can keep our promotion focused on earlier in the week — plus we will have both comedies in our back pocket if we need to make any schedule changes on those nights.  When we have a better idea of viewing patterns in the next few weeks,  we will announce new season premieres of WHITNEY and COMMUNITY.”

Hopefully the network will announce the new season premiere dates ASAP. Are you disappointed by NBC’s decision? Let us know in the comments!

Yep. Disappointed, dismayed, despondent, etc. The only bright spot I can find (if you read between the lines) is that many of NBC’s new sitcoms (Animal Practice, Guys With Kids) are doing pretty horrible in the ratings, right out of the gate, and they were heavily promoted and invested in. Up All Night also isn’t doing well, and this is the last season for both 30 Rock and The Office. There’s a chance that NBC is actually delaying the premiere of Community because they intend to roll it out as a replacement for one of those other quickly expiring series. Or it could just be another example of NBC treating Community like dirt…

It’s Community’s last season too, yes? So it’s unlikely it’s replacing another show in its final season.

Well, 30 Rock and The Office are going out on their own volition…they intended for these latest seasons to be their last. They’ll have a chance to wrap up whatever storylines they want to, have any last hurrahs, etc. If this is Community’s last season (and NBC has neither confirmed nor denied this) it isn’t the same as the above examples, because Community is progressing as if this is simply another (albeit shortened) season, hoping for a 5th season. NBC has indicated (but perhaps falsely) that they would be willing to either extend this latest season of Community beyond 13 episodes to a full 22 or so, or even to renew the show for a 5th season if it improves in the ratings. But by banishing the show to the dead zone of Friday nights (when most people are out and about doing other things) it’s all but giving up on the show. It is entirely possible it could replace another show, though; an established low-rated show is still more valuable than a freshman-year low-rated show (like a few of NBC’s new sitcoms which are already failing), so it’s possible NBC might eat crow and put Community back on Thursday nights again…but they’re waiting a few weeks to test the waters and make sure their new sitcoms don’t rise in the ratings. They don’t want to establish Community on Friday nights if it means they’ll just be switching the show to Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays in a few weeks anyway. It’s a whole weird little game that networks play, and sometimes it baffles me.

I’ll never understand why NBC hates Community as much as it does…

I just sent them an email regarding how upset they are making me and the rest of the fans of the show. And they immediately emailed me back saying they can’t answer my question. I’m so glad they respect the voice of their audience…
