Brooms up! LeakyNews spent an incredible two days at Quidditch World Cup VI in Kissimmee, Florida and it was an experience like no other. We definitely gained a new respect for the amazing athletes and the dedicated staff, refs, announcers, and volunteers from the International Quidditch Association. Their hard work and passion for this sport were present in every moment of the weekend.
Over 80 teams from the US, Canada, Mexico, and France played games all day Saturday to qualify for the playoff brackets on Sunday. After some intense semi-finals (most everyone in the crowd around us agreed that the seemingly endless face-off between UCLA and Baylor’s seekers and the snitch was the one of the most intense they’d ever seen), only two were left standing. University of Texas and UCLA played for the title in the championship game on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams played hard, but only one could be victorious and at the end of the highest scoring final game in Quidditch World Cup history, the team from University of Texas proudly accepted their much deserved trophy.
Between games both days there was plenty to entertain the fans and athletes, including performances by wizard rockers Harry and the Potters and Team StarKid members Joe Moses, Joey Richter, Brian Rosenthal, and Joe Walker. We’ll have plenty of details, photos, and more for you very soon. (Ever wonder which quidditch positions the guys from StarKid would play? We asked, so start putting your fantasy team together!)
And we know you’re just dying to find out what exactly was going on here:
We’ll have a recap of the game play and performances from the weekend for you very soon along with tons more photos. To tide you over, check out the LeakyNews Instagram for more of our photos from today.
