Last week, Once creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis held a panel at the D23 Expo talking about the Once Upon a Time and its Wonderland spin-off, showing a sneak-peek from the first episode of season three as well as answering questions. Just yesterday though they finally announced the casting for the young mermaid princess, Ariel.
Probably the biggest thing to come out of the D23 Expo panel was the brief two-minute two-minute clip shown of Rumplestilskin and a Lost Boy pre-curse. A very grainy recording of the clip has been uploaded online and it shows how afraid Rumple is of Peter Pan. And if he’s afraid, then I think we should all be afraid. Take a look;
“The boy” is most likely referring to Bae, and also emphasizes how much Pan needs him if he is willing to take on The Dark One. The exchange also suggests that Pan has power beyond Rumple’s . The Lost Boy also throws down a doll which reduces Rumple to tears. There is clearly a much bigger past here than the clip or anything else has let on. Hopefully this will be explored in detail next season.
A lot of concentration seems to be on Neverland (and with nearly every series regular headed there, it’s a given) but Belle and the rest of Storybrooke will still have significant impact in the show. The creators were also asked about other places and characters they would like to explore. Rapunzel and Tiana (The Princess and the Frog) were two characters mentioned by the creators but a worthy story would need to be found for them first. Oz is a place they mentioned would be somewhere they would like to go but they also stated that we wouldn’t be going there any time soon.
Almost a week after the D23 panel, the wait for Ariel casting news is over! It was announced at this years Comic-Con that Ariel would be appearing in the upcoming third season and Once has finally cast JoAnna Garcia (Reba) as the free-spirited mermaid. TV Guide exclusively broke the news yesterday, saying that she will appear in episode six which is entitled Ariel and is expected to appear in at least one other episode.
Like many of the other characters on the show, Ariel is expected to have a twist to her story. According to co-creator Eddy Kitsis; ”Ursula could appear this season, absolutely. But on our show you never know what that might mean.” Another tease! Could Ursula be someone we already know? Regina has mentioned a mermaid in a fairy tale flashback before and there’s also a particular villain already on the show who loves making deals. The only other character from the Disney tale that was mentioned was Prince Eric, who may make an appearance as well.
