It’s runway morning, and Ven is STILL complaining. “Some people had smaller models that’s not fair.” Dude. Shut up.
Since this is the L’Oreal challenge, they’re given a little extra time in hair and makeup. Which really just means they have three hours to finish their look. Honestly, it looks like a thrown-together look. He couldn’t have made it any more evident that he’s not into this client at all. She’s crying, terribly unhappy, other clients are trying to help her feel better, and the more he keeps talking the deeper the whole he digs. It really makes me wonder if the producers interview these designers with the explicit purpose of finding one who’s terrified of big women. This seems to be an all-too-often refrain at this point.
Nathan – Oh, darling. What can I day? It looks well made, and she looks okay in it, but there’s something about that mesh. It’s like someone was doing a concept for what Pretty Woman would have been like if it starred Selena. Or Shangela.
Elena – It’s super cute and definitely on trend. Jenna looks SO happy in this outfit. It’s flattering, slimming, and just right. Her hair is killer, too. No more swim camp curls. The coloring in the outfit is great, the silhouette is so flattering, and her butt looks awesome. Good job, Elena.
Melissa – Honestly, it’s probably best you have immunity this week. I feel like there was a good idea here that flattened out and ran off to hide. What I can see of the silhouette is meh, and that scarf is just cumbersome. It’s also a little short for my taste, just given her proportions. Take it to the knee and make the scarf a shrug or a balero, and we’re in business. As it is, this is a mess.
Gunnar – It’s dark, but it’s frilly and fun and Kim is loving it. She’s embracing the sass and serving it up on that runway. While I think we lose a little bit of Gunnar in the design, I think it’s still very well made and, ultimately, the client is happy. And her hair is killer. This is what a make-over should do. It should just make you look different, you should also feel different. I’m living for Kim right now. The cut of the dress is very flattering and she is shakin’ that ass. Love it.
Alicia – It’s very different for her, and she might have let the client overtake her own influence. It’s very young…, but maybe a little too young. Her hair is killer and the coloring is very complimentary to her skin tone, but the straps and the triangles give it too junior a feel for me.
Christopher – The dress looks well made, but I feel like the draping didn’t have his full attention. It only feels about 85% there. If we lost much more, this would be a very shiny toga. Maybe a different belt, too. I’m sure that jacket is gorgeous but she just couldn’t care about it less. Bless his heart.
Ven - He actually managed to make her look bigger than she actually is. If she’s only a 14 as he claimed, that’s not even really “plus sized.” The skirt is too tight and paired with that flowy top it just makes her look like she’s trying to hard. It’s bad Edna Turnblad. And I feel bad for her because it’s clear Ven just didn’t care about making her look good, and was just trying to get through this challenge.
Dmitry – Super cute, very well made, the hair is to die for… it’s just really safe. Nothing stands out as amazing, but it’s far from terrible. The client seems to like it, and she should, but I think this is another safe pass for the Russian.
Fabio – Cute, cute, cute. Cute. SO cute. The blocking totally works, and he’s managed to let this tomboy feel girly while keeping some sense of her personal style. I think we’re finally getting a feel for who Fabio is, and it may have taken this real-world challenge to get us there. The styling is spot on, the hair is darling, and she looks so damn happy. Bravo.
Sonjia – I love the detailing, I love the color, I love the styling. The hair is super cute, and Sonjia has given us another darling and well-made garment. But it’s too damn short. It’s Jersey girl short. Hell, it might be Jersey Shore short. She’s pretty in it, but it’s so short it makes her legs and hips look bigger than they are. It’s the worst of pear-shaped optical illusions.
