Sherlock Hints For Series 3

Editor

The executive producers of BBC’s Sherlock, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, announced three words today that are meant to define the third series of the show: Rat, Wedding, Bow.

Our friends at The Guardian are reporting the much anticipated announcement was made today at a Sherlock masterclass they gave along with producer Sue Vertue and BAFTA award winning supporting actor Andrew Scott.

Moffat and Gatiss announced three words last series as well. Yesterday, Moffat tweeted “Last year it was Woman, Hound, Fall. This year’s three words revealed tomorrow at#MGEITF #Sherlock Master Class.” We now know these words were direct clues to the three original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories that the episodes would draw from.

Which old Sherlock Holmes stories do you think they are drawing from this time? Sound off in the comments!

but actually this is so scary. If John freaking gets married I will write angry letters to Mofftiss. I swear. xD

Rat is obviously a reference to the “giant rat of Sumatra,” one of the untold tales that Watson mentions in “The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire.” This rat is kind of an in-joke among Sherlockians.

Bow, I think, is a reference to “His Last Bow,” a VERY late short story in which he infiltrates a German spy organization by going deep undercover as an Irish-American criminal by the name of Altamont.

I have NO idea about wedding. It’s not a reference to any of the short story or novel titles. There’s the wedding of Watson and Mary Morstan, of course. Then there’s “A Scandal in Bohemia,” but they’ve already made that a wedding-less episode. Weddings happen or almost happen in “A Case of Identity” and “The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor.” So I don’t know…

I love the full response! What do you mean by the rat being an in-joke? (For the record, this is the author of the article asking XD)

Well we can assume that the first episode of the 2013 season will at least include part of The Adventure of the Empty House. That’s the story that brings Holmes back to Baker Street.

I agree with Angela that it would be wonderful if the Giant Rat of Sumatra makes an appearance but “rat” could also be a veiled reference to The Bruce Partington Plans with “rat” being used to refer to the concept of a “traitor.”

“Bow” would likely refer to the story by that name or all of the stories that are typically lumped together under the heading of “His Last Bow”, which includes “the Bruce Partington Plans”.

The story, His Last Bow, also has an element of “rat” in it since it has to do with spies and Holmes going undercover as a spy.

“Wedding” could refer to a few of the stories that related to weddings or near-weddings but it would be logical for it to refer to Watson’s marriage.

I’m just sorry there are only 3 episodes a season. I resisted watching these shows on Netflix because I believed no one could fill Jeremy Brett’s shoes. I didn’t think a modern version of Holmes would be good but I’m really addicted.
