WARNING: This article contains spoilers.
With Moriarty confirmed dead at the end of series two, Sherlock no longer has an arch-nemesis. Well he didn’t, until Sue Vertue (producer) revealed via Twitter earlier who the new villain will be in series three.
Many fans have been speculating about who the new villain might be. Of course they have – two years is a long wait. Moriarty’s right hand man, Sebastian Moran, pops up a lot, and there’s nothing to say that he won’t appear in the series. Sherlock has had to face more than one enemy before. But now the main villain, or ‘nemesis’ as Vertue put it, is Charles Augustus Magnussen.

So, who is Charles Augustus Magnussen? Well for starters, in actual Sherlock Holmes canon his last name is Milverton. He appears in the 56th Sherlock Holmes short story, The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton. On Wikipedia he is described as a “blackmailer…who causes Holmes more revulsion than any of the 50-odd murderers in his career.” The story centers around him and Lady Eva Blackwell, who has hired Holmes to retrieve a letter forged by Milverton which could end her marriage. Well it looks like Sherlock may have his work cut out.
Another interesting part from the summary on Wikipedia is that “[Sherlock] cultivates the acquaintance of Milverton’s housemaid and even becomes engaged to marry her.” Could this possibly refer to the “wedding” teaser from co-creator Mark Gatiss? It would certainly not be the first time they have tried to confuse us, considering that it looks like Watson has also got married.
Magnussen will be played by Danish actor Lars Mikkelsen, who has appeared in many films (mostly Danish) including Headhunter, King’s Game, and the TV series The Killing.
Filming began in Cardiff again this week on series three episode three, His Last Vow. The new series is set to premiere in the UK later this year and in the US in early 2014.
