According to TVline, the fictional musical “Hit List” from the show Smash will be staged by 54 Below in New York City. On December 9th, fans of the recently canceled TV show will be able to see two concert-performances of the musical. So far Jeremy Jordan, Krysta Rodriguez, and Andy Mientus have confirmed that they will be returning to the production. More actors will be announced leading up to the performance.
In an interview, showrunner Josh Safran told us that “a lot of details about the plot of Hit List were cut.” In the concert production, we can expect to see these details as well as new songs that never made it to the television show. According to the plot synopsis that was released last spring, Hit List follows Amanda, a pop star who becomes famous by stealing songs from Jesse, an aspiring song writer. They fall in love, but Amanda’s career threatens their relationship, ultimately ending in tragedy.
I’m sure I’m not the only Smash fan who started hyperventilating at this news. Not only will there be live performances of the well-known songs as well as new songs that were never released on the TV show, but we’ll also get to understand the context of the songs better. Many times we only saw the fully staged performances of Hit List‘s main numbers but not the lines or scenes that introduced them. Hopefully the full show will live up to the adoration most Smash fans have for its music.
It’s especially exciting to see that some of the original Smash actors will be returning. I could never imagine anyone other than Jeremy Jordan as Jimmy, and it will be interesting to see which other actors return (and who will be replacing those who don’t). I’m especially interested to see how Andy Mientus is incorporated into the performance. His character, Kyle, helped write Hit List in the television show but wasn’t actually in the musical.
This is exciting news for Smash fans, especially those lucky enough to see the performance in December. We’ll be following the story as more details about the performance are released. What part of Hit List are you most excited for?
