Star Wars to Get The Marvel Treatment – Multiple Spin-offs Planned

Managing Editor

Yesterday, news broke that Disney planned on making a lot more Star Wars movies than we originally thought. Which shouldn’t be too surprising seeing as they didn’t buy the property to make a finite number of films.

What was news, is that they plan on making not only the Episodes VII-IX trilogy (the first of which will be directed by JJ Abrams), but also standalone spin-offs to be released simultaneously  Think of it similar to the Marvel films – lots of single superhero movies, and then a few MASSIVE collaborations, all continuously appearing at our movie houses.

Today, Entertainment Weekly posted an exclusive regarding the content of the spin-off movies; the first two will most likely be a Han Solo origin, and a Boba Fett adventure.

The Han Solo story would take place in the time period between Revenge of the Sith and the first Star Wars (now known as A New Hope), so although it’s possible Harrison Ford could appear as a framing device, the movie would require a new actor for the lead — one presumably much younger than even the 35-year-old Ford when he appeared in the 1977 original.

The Boba Fett film would take place either between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, or between Empire and Jedi, where the bounty hunter was last seen plunging unceremoniously into a sarlacc pit. Exactly who would play him isn’t much of a complication – in the original trilogy, he never took off his helmet. And in the prequels, we learned he was the son of the original stormtrooper clone, played by Temuera Morrison, who’s still the right age for the part if his services were required.

Film about our favorite lovable scoundrel? Check.

Film about the coolest character in all of Star Wars?** Check.

Opportunities for us to play more casting spec games with young sexy actors? Check

Disney is going to own our souls for a very, very long time.

**Yeah I know. It’s technically debatable. You can argue Lando all you want. His cape was always a little too disco for me.

I would love a movie about Han Solo, but I wonder what they would/will be doing about a love interest. I can’t imagine Disney making a film without at least a lovestory in the subplot. But it’ll be really hard to convince the audience of anyone when we all know Princess Leia is coming.
Well, I guess I’m overthinking this already. Anyway, I’m excited!

Not overthinking at all! I’m sure there’ll be some sort of romantic interest. I mean.. he *is* a scoundrel. It’d be ridiculous to think Leia was his first relationship at 30.

Of course. I just hope they use that chance to give us some more awesome female Star Wars characters, since they are not that plenty as of now.
