The End of the World, STARKID Style

Editor

The APOCALYPTOUR ended with a bang last night as confetti cascaded down on the 3,500 screaming fans in the sold-out Roseland Ballroom in NYC.

Despite having been on a whirlwind tour around the country for the past month the Starkids were as energetic as ever singing and dancing like it really was the end of the world. The “plot” of the show, which featured Jim Povolo as the evil Mayan ruler who was coming to bring about the end of the world, was artfully simple lending the show an arc  without becoming too cheesy. The atmosphere was intoxicating as the crowd (some of whom had been queuing since Saturday) sang to their favorite Starkid classics.

Charlene Kaye opened the show with a peppy celebratory set that mirrored the atmosphere of the crowd. Kaye knew how to win over the packed room with quips about “obscure” bands who have played the Roseland like Beyonce and Radiohead and offers to draw pictures for fans of their marriage to Joey Richter. When Darren Criss stepped onto the stage to sing a duet with Kaye the screams were probably heard in Brooklyn.

After Kaye’s set, the anticipation of the crowd for what was coming next was palpable. Opening the show with a rambunctious rendition of the title number from Me and My Dick, the Starkids were smooth sailing. The APOCALYPTOUR was a well directed amalgam of everything Starkid should be. It had comedy, joy, and heart. The smiles on the Starkids faces were infectious and the small number of people there who weren’t Starkid fans before were easily sucked in. With multiple members thanking their families the show truly felt like a celebration. After nearly two hours of nonstop singing and dancing the Starkids took their leave. And as the confetti continued to fall all 3,500 fans were nothing but smiles.

It was a magical night and we can’t wait to see what these crazy kids will be up to in Chicago!

Roseland is far from the top of my list of venues to go to in the future, but they put in a phenomenal show nonetheless!

Dear God, I’m glad for once I live in Colorado. The Apocalyptour here was great, and packed, and the fangirls were sometimes annoyingly louder than the performers. But there weren’t so many of them that it ruined the show. But yeah, they freakin’ rocked it. That goes for Charlene and her band as well, it was a truly phenomenal show all around.

Oh, I have so many ideas of what Leaky will be…couldn’t make it to this tour but that’s ok, I can’t wait to see them all again at Leaky and give them all big hugs. It will be a party. I know that already.

I was at the show….it was AMAZING. Truly the best experience of my life. I met a lot of awesome people from all over, too. The line was cray, it literally wrapped around 52nd and 53rd and Broadway TWICE by the time they let us in. The audience was great though, and the starkids were wonderful!

I’m so, so bummed that I didn’t have the ca $3000 it would have cost me to go ready and disposable! Well, lesson learned – from now on (as soon as I get a job, at least), I’m making sure to always have a good sum of “travel money” ready! Super sad I’m missing LeakyCon, too… Next year, I’ll be ready! :P

I flew up from NC to see it and it was amazing! I’m sad that they weren’t able to meet people after the show though, and it was pretty crowded, but the crowd was upbeat and awesome! I loved seeing people’s costumes who dressed up, especially the guy dressed up as Sweet Tooth! :)

I WAS THERE. It really was magical. I stood in line for seven hours, and that wasn’t even a lot compared to the people at the front of the line (who, yes, had been there since 11 the night before). I had an amazing time just standing in line. When I heard screams from by the stage door I ran over to see the entire cast entering and leaving the building every so often. I have to say the highlight of this experience was when Liam White (the camera guy, and the inspiration for the song “Liam’s Got a Phone Call”) came out talking on the phone. The girls behind me broke into song, and it just seemed so Starkid-y. Overall I had an amazing time and I wish I could relive it over and over again!
