What did we learn from last night’s Vampire Diaries? The 70s looked pretty much the same as the present except Damon wore a tad more eyeliner. We also learnt that Lexi is as big of a Salvawhore as Katherine and Elena are (seriously what is it with those brothers) and that Caroline will do just about anything to save the least appealing character in Mystic Falls. Other than that, Episode 17 “Because the Night” was sort of meh. Our overall reaction was pretty much the same as Elena’s.

At this point we’re just waiting for them to tie up the lose ends of the cure/Silas plot line and end this abismal season. A fresh start and Season 5 are not far off, which can only be a good thing. Season 4 took a turn for the meh as soon as Stefan and Caroline revealed the sire bond. Neither Damon and Elena’s nor Stefan and Rebekah’s relationship were allowed to play itself out. The Shadypants plot took over the whole show and it is just not that interesting. Perhaps there will be a twist ending and someone we don’t expect will take the cure, but more likely or not they will use it to destroy Silas.
Unlike Klaus or Katherine, Silas/Shadypants is a completely unappealing villan. We wouldn’t care if he died or just flat out left and long as we didn’t have to see his face again. The appeal of the earlier seasons of The Vampire Diaries was how the villains grow on you. Katherine went from terrifying to the girl we all want to party with and Klaus has grown from pure psychopath to incredibly damaged psychopath with a loving soul. Silas is just plain evil, annoying, and let’s be honest not even attractive (when in Shadypants’ body at least). His lack of redeeming qualities have made him the dullest villain on The Vampire Diaries and no one cares.
Forget about The Originals where’s the Elena and Rebekah show, I’d watch that. Claire Holt was unsurprisingly the best part of “Because the Night”. Whenever she is on screen she kills it and her new partnership with Elena will hopefully lead to sassy good times and a Katherine/Elena/Rebekah showdown for the ages.

Other stuff happening on last night’s episode: Bonnie gets possessed by Silas and it’s super creepy. She wakes up a couple of days later and doesn’t remember anything. She doesn’t even remember Jeremy’s dead. Now we’ll have to watch Bonnie cry because of Jeremy all over again. Seriously once was enough. Caroline completes the massacre triangle by killing the witches as their about to kill Bonnie. Our favorite Vampire Barbie turns to Klaus for comfort, but he’s not having it. He’s so broken and screwed up that he turns away the best chance he’s ever had with Caroline for spite. Another heartbreaking moment for Klaroline fans. Will those two (literally) crazy kids ever work things out?

Later on Silas/Shadypants finds Klaus in the woods. He has gotten his sleazy hands the white oak stake. Aha! Told you to keep an eye on that thing. Silas/Shadypants threatens Klaus and stabs him in the back. It seems to hurt a lot. That damn stake. Maybe Caroline will nurse him back to health in 4×18.
Let’s do the score card. Silas/Shadypants now has the white oak stake and his three massacres. Katherine has the cure. Elena and Rebekah have Damon’s car. Bonnie has amnesia. Caroline is a mass murderer. No one has heard from Matt Donovan and Jeremy’s still dead. That about sums up Vampire Diaries 4×17. Not the best episode or the worst, just another placeholder for what’s to come. There was a time when every episode of The Vampire Diaries was jam packed with action and drama. In the final stretch of the season let’s hope the show turns itself back in that direction.
So what did you think of last night’s episode? Was there any purpose to the 70s flashbacks? Is Bonnie really free from Silas? With the radio broken are Elena and Rebekah singing show tunes on their road trip? Let me know in the comments.
The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday at 8/7c on the CW.
