“Veronica will survive the movie,” declares Thomas. “I can’t promise anyone else does though. But there will be an opportunity for Veronica do to her thing again.” As in a sequel? A 10-episode Season 4 on Netflix? “I’d be lying if I didn’t say I didn’t think of those things,” admits Thomas. “I am hopeful it is the birth of [much more] Veronica Mars.”
Thomas says he’s shooting for a PG-13 rating, which is the right move. Part of the appeal of Veronica Mars is its tendency towards smart jokes that tow the line between PG-13 and R. Going all the way to the crass side, wouldn’t suit the Neptune gang. The rest of the interview is much less vague. Rob Thomas confirms to TVLine that the movie will see Veronica headed back to Neptune for her 10 year high school reunion. She won’t be single either. Thomas won’t say if her current man is a new character or an old one, but he does confirm it won’t be with Logan who “she hasn’t seen for 9 years”.
So what has Veronica been up to for the past 9 years if she isn’t having sexytimes with Logan?
“She transferred away from Hearst college after that freshman year and went up to Stanford and finished her undergraduate degree. And then she went to Columbia Law School. She’s certainly been back to Neptune from time to time to see her dad and Mac and Wallace, but she hasn’t worked a PI case since the last one we all saw in the final episode of Season 3. She ruined her dad’s chance for re-election and she decided that that path had caused too much chaos in her life. And so she hasn’t worked a PI case in nine years. And when we meet her, she’s sort of like where Tom Cruise was in the beginning of The Firm. She’s between having graduated and taken the bar and she’s interviewing at various law firms in New York.”
As far as returning characters go, so far only Kristen Bell is signed on, but we will see familiar faces. Thomas doesn’t want to overload the movie with cameos though and not everyone will be invited back. Though he joked about Amanda Seyfried in the Kickstarter video, she won’t be back for the film. It’s unlikely we’ll see Jessica Chastain, Adam Scott, Leighton Meester, Paris Hilton, or any of the other one or two episode characters. Let’s just hold out hope for the return of Deputy Leo.
We may not get to see Max Greenfield suit up, but we will see the continuation of Keith and Veronica’s relationship, which is one of the best father-daughter relationships ever captured on television.
It’s good to know that Thomas will be aiming for a film that suits new fans and old. The more new fans Veronica Mars gains, the higher the likelihood this won’t be the last we see of her.
Rob also posted a thank you video with more updates. Maybe it’s time for us to hire a PI to keep up on all these Veronica Mars updates. (Yes, that’s a bad joke.)
The Veronica Mars movie is set to film this summer and be released in 2014. Check out the Kickstarter for more info.
