Vulture’s “Glee” Set Report: Season 4 Becoming a Spinoff?

The fourth season of Glee was always going to try to do something different with half the permanently high-school-age cast in Ohio and those allowed to graduate making waves in New York City. We’ve known for quite some time that the storylines will flit back and forth between Kurt and Rachel’s New York adventure and, well, everyone else. When the writers at Vulture visited Glee‘s New York, however, they found the Kurt and Rachel storylines rather dominated. The article has a few plot spoilers with direct quotations from the episodes, so tread carefully, but it generally indicates a Glee that has grown up (or at least out) of high school. Read the full Vulture article at this link.

Is Glee basically just going to become a spinoff Rachel and Kurt show…and is that such a bad thing? Let us know in comments! Glee returns on September 13th with “The New Rachel.”

Very interesting article from Vulture. It seems like an odd move. If you’re going to do a spinoff, I say actually do a spinoff. End Glee entirely with graduation and just do the Rachael and Kurt show.

As an alternative, It’s out of the box but I kind of like the idea of 2 half hour shows on different nights. As in “McKinley High” and “Rachael & Kurt”. It would never happen, but it would be an interesting new way to continue the story lines and maybe garner some new viewership for each show as a stand alone.

Ugh, didn’t read the article because I prefer to remain spoiler free, but really? I’ve been worried about this since Lea started tweeting so much about being on the set of Glee, and if this is true, I just really think it is a BAD move for Glee. It’s not the Rachel show, it was never supposed to be the Rachel show, and that’s now why people love it, and that’s not what Glee is supposed to be about. Glee needs to adapt and change as new faces come on, and highlight different stories, instead of following a horse until it’s dead. If it was a show that was based around one character instead of a high school that would be different (Buffy had to make changes when she graduated high school, because the show was BUFFY). it’d be like if Doctor Who decided to start following Rose instead of the Doctor at the end of season 2. Even when it’s heartbreaking to lose a companion or a doctor, you have to MOVE ON to a new one. That is a show that knows it has to constantly reinvent itself, but Glee apparently wants to just keep holding on to something it thinks works. I think they probably feel like they’re “growing” and “adapting” by expanding to keep Rachel in, and in a way, there is a level that will open up to attract to it’s fans that are also moving on into college, etc. BUT I think it also shows a severe lack of ability to let something go when the time has come.

Transitioning faces is something TV shows have always struggled with, especially high school shows where you need to transition in and out main characters. In my opinion (and in most critic’s opinion) the only show that has managed to pull off the high school transition properly is Friday Night Lights. It was a struggle, but they did it and did it well because they went for it on FNL. Glee needs to just go for it one way or another, either a spin off with the old characters or a continuation with new students.

Ew, the episode is even TITLED after Rachel? After the odd Glee Project judgements I don’t know if I’ll be watching this season. If they were letting Lea fly away and only visit I’d be more inclined, but this doesn’t seem any less Rachel than the terrible third season of Glee, so I don’t think I’m going to keep watching the show. It’s already jumped the shark, and now it’s turning around and going back for a second jump. They needed to actually reinvent the show if they wanted to keep it afloat, not put Rachel in a different costume and keep the same lame plot arcs they’ve had for ages.
