Who Should Play “Fault in our Stars”‘ Hazel Grace? Our Top 5 Picks

With filming of the adaptation John Green’s novel The Fault In Our Stars likely to happen this summer, the question on everyone’s mind is who should play Hazel Grace Lancaster, the cancer-riddled teen girl who narrates the tragic and empowering love story. A few of us got together and made a top-five list for this coveted role. Producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey say “every actress we’d hope would be interested in the role apparently is” so it seems they have Hollywood for the picking. Agree/disagree with us?     Wow, I’m in love with the idea of Mary Kate for Hazel! I hadn’t considered her, but now that you mention it it seems really obvious. Such a good actress, and perfect for the part.

    Oh my gosh, although I have trouble picturing any Hazel other than the one in my head, I think I would be fine with any of those girls except for Elle Fanning or MK Wiles…please God, no! I’m sure Elle is lovely, but she just doesn’t have the face, attitude, or quirkiness needed for a dazzling performance as Hazel Grace. Mary Kate, on the other hand…yeah, she’s a fabulous Lydia for The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, but she’s not Hazel. At all. I would die. Pleaaaaseee God NOOOOO.

        I’ve watched every episode of Squaresville…and LBD, and the Lydia Bennet…I’ve even seen her episode of The Middle…haha. And I have her on twitter and tumblr…there’s no doubt that she’s a wonderful actress, and I’m well acquainted with her ability to be versatile…but she’s NOT Hazel to me, and never will be. xxx :)

    Oh God, some of these actresses would make Nerdfighters around the world curse this movie. They’re great, but they are NOT Hazel Grace!!! Elle Fanning?? Really?? I personally think Hailee Steinfeld has the looks, but Mary Kate Wiles has the right personality and acting style to play Hazel.

    I feel like Abigail Breslin & Mary Kate Wiles both have the kind of look that I would personally like to see for Hazel Grace, but, with complete respect for both of them, I’m not sure they could pull her off.

      There’s plenty of fish in the sea… er… websites on the internet to play the same game. Once the director is announced and casting begins in earnest I’m sure there will be plenty more entertainment sites making their guesses. It’s not a competition – we love Hypable! The MTV interview got us all talking about our casting ideas today, and so we put it in post format. There’s no expiration date on having a fun discussion.

          It’s no great mystery in that finding pictures you hit up google. The first hit of a nice headshot is usually what ends up in an article, and this is no difference. Also the number five is pretty unoriginal, as is the concept of casting article. No one – neither site discussing it – has done that first. EW does it all the time. So does, you know, everyone. In their heads. it’s really not a thing.

    Rooting for MK (love her so much!) but I think if the producers are going for actors with big screen experience, they should go for Elle Fanning. I do think MK would be perfect, considering how Zelda and Hazel are somewhat similar, and we know she can pull of a dynamic role because of Lydia.

    I’m so so glad you included Mary-Kate on this list. Since I know I won’t get to play Hazel, Mary-Kate is my second choice :P I’ve never thought about Abigail Breslin for the role, but now that the seed is in my mind I’m hoping for her if it has to be somebody already cemented in Hollywood.

    Hailee Steinfeld without a doubt. A face not many people actually associate with a movie in particular since I assume that most people have not seen True Grit. I have and she blew away, absolutely amazing actress and earned that Oscar nom. She has dark hair and a bpretty face and I can SO picture her as Hazel. The rest of them just don’t really seem right to me except Abigail Breslin. I LOVE her but I feel like she has been in too many movies that I have seen and I would be scared that seeing her would remind me too much of the other characters I’ve seen her play.
    Elle Fanning is gorgeous and flawless and an amazing actress but she just doesn’t look like Hazel to me :/

    i love mary kate wiles in LBD and squaresville, but i don’t think she’d fit the role of hazel very well. she’s amazing and lovely, but entirely wrong for this particular role.
